The 2015 vintage will be known for higher quality of fruit with lower yields.  In a year that was considered to be the peak of the drought, the relatively dry and warm winter resulted in small clusters with deeply concentrated flavors and textures. Cooler spring temperatures in May caused a longer flowering period and uneven fruit set, which resulted in less than average quantities. While the warmer than typical summer temperatures brought an early harvest, the expression of aromas, flavors and structure in the 2015 vintage wines are the epitome of our Howell Mountain hillside fruit.

The 2014 growing season was marked by kind weather, a few curveballs and an abundant crop. The winter was one of the driest on record, but heavy rains before bud break gave the vines a well timed drink. The dry winter produced berries smaller in size, but more concentrated with flavors, and an earlier than normal harvest showed immediate promise of high quality.  Gorgeous black fruit, gravel, violets, black cherry, anise, juicy palate with nice stucture and velvety tannins along with chocolate flavors. Finishes with very elegant bittersweet tannins.

Through our barrel program we identify a select few barrels that exhibit extreme complexity and richness. Our Cabernet Sauvignon is black, inky color with delicate aromas of cherry, tar, cedar, blackberry pie, toast, vanilla, currant, char, and peppercorn. Rich, juicy, huge structure that “won’t frighten the horses” of cherry, blackberry, cassis, coffee, vanilla, dark and milk chocolate. Long, rich, spicy finish.

92 Points - Wine Enthusiast, June 2014

The grapes come from the winery's estate vineyards on Howell Mountain, and you can sense the mountain intensity, both of tannins and fruity concentration. The flavors are impressive, suggesting black currant and mocha, with a minerality that grounds the wine. The tannins will help the wine evolve until 2020-2022, but you can drink it now.

An initial burst of berries abounds - raspberry, cherry, blackberry bramble - then violets and floral tones emanate from the glass. The elegant, silky, smooth, lush tannins flow over the palate with blueberry compote, cocoa powder and savory herbs. There's a mid-palate note of sarsaparilla and as the bouquet develops a touch of black pepper.

A historic and cellar-worthy collection of wines, presented in our Burgess Cellars wood wine case, branded with our logo and the mountain winery sketching commissioned by founder Tom Burgess in 1972.  This collection was curated by Vintner Steven Burgess and Winemaker Kelly Woods, and features three selections from 2013, a coveted vintage called 'early, even and excellent'.  Two single vineyard selections represent our two estate vineyards on Howell Mountain, a terroir representing only 4% of Napa Valley acreage.  Our '2013 Ranch Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon' and '2013 Haymaker Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon' should be enjoyed together, in a comparison of east and west palate.  Completing this selection is our '2013 Library Selection Cabernet Sauvignon', the pinnacle of 46 years of family-owned mountain winemaking.

Please call us at the winery on 707.963.4766 to place you order for this special wood case collection.

2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Library Release

2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Library Release

2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Library Release

Few wineries maintain a library selection on the scale of Burgess Cellars Library Program.  Tom Burgess first started putting aside wines in 1980.  He initially held back about 15% of a vintage, between 500 and 1000 cases, which was released a decade later in 1990.  Tom wanted people to have the opportunity, as he had in Europe, to taste how beautiful wine can become with age.  Selections in Burgess Cellars Library Program are stored in ideal conditions  to protect the provenance of our wines until release.
